Size

The Jet Black Trail & Glow harness from Bailey and Coco is a deliberately minimal choice — no pattern, no colour accent, just a clean black exterior with the full Trail & Glow feature set. For owners who want a harness that recedes into the background while their dog's personality does the work, it covers every practical requirement: lockable neck clasp, three-buckle adjustment, front and back D-rings, a back handle, and reflective strips on both panels for low-light visibility.

  • Lockable neck clasp — no pull-over fitting: The neck fastens with a security clasp rather than pulling over the head. Open both buckles, position the harness, clip the neck clasp, fasten the chest strap. Easier and quicker than the traditional pull-over method, particularly for dogs that resist it.
  • 3-buckle fully adjustable fit: Three independent adjustment points — neck strap, chest strap, and girth strap — allow a precise and secure fit across a wide range of dog shapes within each size.
  • Dual D-rings — front and back: The front chest D-ring is for no-pull lead attachment and ID tag use. The back D-ring sits between the shoulder blades for standard walking. Both rated for daily use.
  • Back handle for close control: The sturdy handle between the shoulders gives a reliable grip point at road crossings, near traffic, or around other dogs — without reaching for the collar.
  • Reflective strips front and back: Strips run along the front chest panel and across the back, making your dog visible in low light in both directions. No separate high-vis accessory needed.
  • Breathable, quick-dry mesh lining: The inner mesh minimises heat build-up and dries quickly after wet walks, keeping your dog comfortable in all conditions.

Sizing guide

Measure your dog's neck at its narrowest point and the chest at its widest point behind the front legs. Use the chest as your primary guide. If between sizes on chest measurement, go up.

Size Neck Chest Back length Typical fit
XS 24–34cm 26–50cm 20cm Small terriers, Chihuahua, Toy breeds
S 30–45cm 35–66cm 23cm Cocker Spaniel, Cavapoo, Jack Russell, Whippet
M 35–50cm 40–71cm 26.5cm Springer Spaniel, Beagle, Border Terrier
L 40–60cm 55–83cm 32cm Labrador, Border Collie, Dalmatian
XL 55–83cm 71–99cm 34cm Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Husky

How to fit

Open both buckles fully before fitting. Thread each front leg through the respective chest opening. Fasten the neck clasp first, then the chest buckle. Adjust neck and chest straps independently until the harness sits flat with two fingers of slack at every point. Check the fit has not shifted after your first walk and re-adjust as needed.

Materials and care

Common questions

How do I choose the right size?
Measure the chest at its widest point behind the front legs and use the chest range in the sizing table as your primary guide. Neck size is secondary — chest variation is greater between dogs of the same breed. If between sizes, go up. If unsure, contact us with your measurements.
What is the difference between the front and back D-rings?
The front D-ring on the chest redirects a pulling dog towards you rather than allowing forward momentum — this is the no-pull attachment. The back D-ring between the shoulders is the standard lead attachment for relaxed walking. You can switch between them depending on the walk or your dog's behaviour on the day.
Is a harness better than a collar for walking?
For most dogs, a harness distributes lead pressure more evenly across the chest and shoulders rather than concentrating it on the neck. This is particularly relevant for dogs that pull, small breeds with delicate necks, and brachycephalic breeds. Many owners use a collar for ID tags and a harness for walking — both serve different purposes.
How does the neck clasp work?
The neck clasp is a lockable security mechanism — press and slide to open, rather than a standard push-button release. This makes it harder to open accidentally during active movement. To fit: open both buckles, thread the legs through, clip the neck clasp, fasten the chest buckle, then adjust both straps.
How bright are the reflective strips at night?
The strips reflect light from headlights, torches, and street lighting, making your dog clearly visible from the front and back. On a plain black harness, the reflective strips stand out particularly well in car headlights — the contrast is higher than on a coloured or patterned harness.
Is there a matching lead and collar in Jet Black?
Yes — Bailey and Coco's Jet Black collection includes a matching Trail & Glow collar, 5ft lead, and poo bag holder, all available at Hairy Dogs. The lead uses the same black hardware and clips directly to either D-ring on this harness.
