The Anco Ostrich Caveman Bone is a single-ingredient natural chew made from 100% ostrich bone — one of the largest natural chews in the Anco range, designed specifically for large breeds and strong, enthusiastic chewers. The size and density of an ostrich bone makes it a long-lasting, satisfying chew that smaller or softer treats simply cannot replicate, while the ultra-low fat content (1.3%) makes it one of the few genuinely suitable options for dogs on restricted fat diets.

Single ingredient. Grain-free. Chicken-free. No additives, no artificial preservatives.

  • Single ingredient — 100% ostrich: One ingredient, no fillers. The entire product is ostrich bone — nothing added, nothing processed beyond natural air-drying. This makes it one of the most transparent and traceable chews available, and suitable for dogs on elimination diets where ingredient control is critical.
  • Ultra-low fat — 1.3%: This is exceptionally low for a natural chew. Many raw meaty bones and chews carry fat contents of 10–20%, which can trigger digestive upset or pancreatitis flare-ups in sensitive dogs. At 1.3% fat, this bone is suitable for dogs with pancreatitis, hyperlipidaemia, or those on low-fat dietary management — a rare quality in a chew this size.
  • High protein — 30%: Ostrich is a lean, high-protein meat. The bone provides meaningful protein content alongside the structural benefits of the chew itself — useful for maintaining muscle in older or convalescing dogs.
  • Long-lasting dental aid: The extended chewing time required to work through a bone of this size provides sustained mechanical cleaning action on teeth, helping to reduce plaque and tartar build-up. Dogs that chew regularly on appropriately sized natural bones consistently show better dental health than those that don't.
  • For large breeds and power chewers: The scale and density of this bone makes it unsuitable for small breeds — it's designed for dogs that finish smaller chews in minutes and need something that will genuinely occupy them. Breeds such as German Shepherds, Labradors, Rottweilers, and similar that are enthusiastic, persistent chewers will find this a more satisfying and longer-lasting option.
  • Chicken-free and grain-free: Ostrich is a novel protein — it has no relationship to chicken, turkey, or other common poultry allergens. Suitable for dogs on chicken-free or poultry elimination diets.

The high ash content is typical of bone-based products — ash reflects the mineral content (primarily calcium and phosphorus) rather than an additive.

Feeding guidance and safety

Suitable from 8 weeks. Always supervise your dog when feeding any natural bone or chew. Ensure fresh water is readily available at all times.

Bone safety: Natural bones, including ostrich bones, carry a risk of splintering — particularly as the bone is worked down in size. Remove and dispose of the bone once it becomes small enough to be swallowed whole, or once the ends have been chewed to sharp points. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a bone. If your dog is an extremely aggressive chewer or has dental work, consult your vet before feeding hard natural bones.

Feed as a treat or reward as part of a nutritionally balanced diet. Adjust main meals accordingly if feeding chews regularly to maintain appropriate calorie balance.

Common questions

Is this suitable for dogs with pancreatitis?
Yes — at 1.3% fat this is one of the very few natural chews appropriate for dogs with pancreatitis or those on low-fat dietary management. Most chews, including many marketed as "natural," carry fat contents that make them unsuitable for these dogs. Always check with your vet before introducing new foods if your dog has a history of pancreatitis, particularly during or after a flare-up.
What size dog is this suitable for?
This is one of the largest treats in the Anco range and is designed for medium to large breeds — from around 15kg upwards. It's particularly well suited to powerful, persistent chewers such as German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Huskies, and similar breeds. It is not suitable for small dogs or puppies under the recommended size, as the scale of the bone presents a choking risk for dogs unable to work it down safely.
Why ostrich — how does it compare to beef or pork bones?
Ostrich bone is significantly leaner than most mammalian bones — beef and pork bones typically carry fat contents of 10–30%, while ostrich sits at 1.3%. Ostrich is also a novel protein, meaning it has no relationship to common allergens like chicken, beef, or pork — making it suitable for dogs on elimination diets. It's a harder, denser bone than poultry alternatives, which contributes to its longer-lasting nature. For dogs that need a large, satisfying chew but cannot tolerate higher-fat options, ostrich is one of the few alternatives available.
Why does the ash content show 64%?
High ash content in bone products is entirely normal and expected. Ash measures the mineral content remaining after incineration — in the case of a bone, this is primarily calcium and phosphorus, which make up the structural matrix of bone. A 64% ash reading simply reflects the high mineral density of a dense ostrich bone. It is not an additive or a concern — if anything, it confirms you're getting a mineral-rich natural chew rather than a processed product.
