Tackle stubborn knots and mats without reaching for the scissors. The Ancol Ergo Mat Splitter has a sharp internal blade set behind a tapered guide, so it slices through tangles and matted fur while the guide helps keep the blade away from your dog's skin. The ergonomic handle makes it comfortable to control. Ideal for long-haired breeds and thick undercoats as part of regular at-home grooming.

  • Internal blade design — cuts through mats from the inside, designed to be safer than using open scissors near the skin.
  • Tapered guide — helps protect the skin as the blade works through the mat.
  • Ergonomic handle — comfortable and easy to control.
  • Suits most coat types — especially long-haired breeds and thick undercoats.
  • Part of the Ancol Ergo grooming range.

How to use

  1. Gently comb through the coat to find the tangles or mats.
  2. Hold the splitter upright with the base flat against the skin.
  3. Slide the blade into the mat using short, gentle strokes, working with the lie of the coat.
  4. Don't angle or lift the splitter against the skin, and work a large mat in small sections.

Safety

Contains a sharp blade — always use with care and keep out of reach of children. Never use on loose or folded skin, and stop if your dog won't stay calm and still. If a mat is very tight to the skin or your dog is uncomfortable, it's safer to have a professional groomer remove it. Store the blade safely between uses.

Part of the Ancol Ergo range — grooming tools designed to sit comfortably in the hand.

Common questions

Is it safer than scissors?
It's designed to be — the blade sits inside the tool behind a guide, so it cuts the mat rather than exposing an open blade next to the skin. You still need to work carefully and never cut blind against the skin.
What coats is it best for?
Long-haired breeds and dogs with thick undercoats that are prone to matting. Regular brushing between uses helps stop mats forming in the first place.
My dog won't keep still — what should I do?
Stop and try again when they're calm, or ask a professional groomer to help. Never use a bladed tool on a wriggling dog.
How do I look after it?
Keep it clean and dry, store it safely out of reach of children, and replace it if the blade becomes blunt or damaged.
