Dogs regulate body temperature almost entirely through panting and the pads of their paws — both slow and limited processes when the air temperature is high. The Ancol Ice Paws cooling coat works by a different and more direct mechanism: soak it in cold water, put it on your dog, and the gradual evaporation of water from the fabric draws heat away from their body throughout the session. It can be re-soaked and reapplied as often as needed throughout the day, making it practical for long walks, outdoor events, or any dog prone to overheating in warm weather.

  • Evaporative cooling that begins immediately: The moment the wet coat is on, the evaporation process starts. Cooling continues until the coat dries, at which point you simply re-soak and reapply — no refrigeration or preparation time required.
  • Belly strap for a secure fit: The adjustable belly strap holds the coat in place during movement, preventing it from shifting or riding up during a walk.
  • Six sizes covering XS to XXL: Sized by back length and maximum girth, the range spans from small toy breeds up to giant dogs — use the sizing table below to find the right fit before ordering.
  • Reusable throughout the day: As the coat dries and your dog warms up again, re-soak in cold water and put it back on. No limits on how many times it can be used in a single session or day.
  • Machine washable at 30°C: Can be put through the washing machine for a thorough clean when needed, rather than just rinsed each time.

Sizing guide

Measure your dog's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail for the length. For girth, measure around the widest part of the body, typically behind the front legs. If your dog is at the upper end of a girth range, size up for comfortable coverage and ease of movement.

Size Back length Max girth Typical breeds
XS 25cm 50cm Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Pomeranian
S 30cm 60cm Miniature Dachshund, Jack Russell, small Shih Tzu
M 40cm 70cm Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Whippet, Cavapoo
L 50cm 80cm Labrador, Border Collie, Springer Spaniel
XL 60cm 90cm Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Husky
XXL 70cm 100cm Great Dane, Newfoundland, Saint Bernard

How to use and care

Submerge the coat in cold water until fully saturated. Remove, shake off any excess, and fit it onto your dog, fastening the belly strap firmly but not tightly — you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under the strap. As the coat dries and your dog begins to warm again, re-soak and reapply. Machine wash at 30°C when a full clean is needed. Do not tumble dry.

Common questions

Which size should I order for my dog?
Use the sizing table above as your guide. Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail for back length, and around the widest part of the body behind the front legs for girth. If your dog sits at the top of a girth range, choose the next size up — a slightly longer coat is better than one that is too tight across the body.
How does the cooling actually work?
The coat works through evaporative cooling — the same principle as sweating in humans. When the wet fabric is in contact with your dog's body, the water evaporates and draws heat away from the skin. The effect is gradual and sustained rather than instant, and it continues for as long as the coat remains damp. On a warm day with air movement, expect meaningful cooling for 20 to 40 minutes before re-soaking is needed.
Is it safe to leave my dog unattended while wearing the coat?
We would not recommend leaving your dog unsupervised in any item of clothing or apparel, including this coat. Check regularly that the belly strap has not shifted, is not restricting movement or breathing, and that the coat is not causing any discomfort. If your dog appears distressed or attempts to remove the coat, take it off and allow them to cool down in another way.
My dog dislikes wearing clothing — how should I introduce this?
Introduce the coat gradually in a calm environment before using it on a walk. Let your dog sniff and inspect it first, then try putting it on briefly indoors with a reward. Build up the wearing time over several sessions before using it in a more stimulating environment outdoors. Dogs that associate clothing with positive experiences generally adjust quickly.
Can I use it on a dog that enjoys swimming?
If your dog swims while wearing the coat, the fabric will remain saturated and continue cooling effectively — swimming acts as an automatic re-soak. However, supervise closely in or near water to ensure the belly strap does not restrict movement, and always remove the coat and check for any rubbing or discomfort after a swim session.
How do I clean the coat?
Machine wash at 30°C using a mild detergent. Do not tumble dry — lay flat or hang to air dry. Rinsing thoroughly in clean water after each use will extend the time between washes. If the coat develops an odour from repeated use without washing, a full machine wash will restore it.
