Leucillin is a veterinary-grade antiseptic based on hypochlorous acid (HOCl) — the same antimicrobial molecule the body's own white blood cells produce to fight infection. This makes it simultaneously highly effective and completely safe: it kills 99.99999% of bacteria, viruses, and fungal spores on contact, while being non-toxic if licked, non-stinging on open wounds, and safe for use directly in eyes, ears, and on sensitive or inflamed skin. Available in five sizes, from a 50ml precision dropper through to a 500ml refill spray.

  • 99.99999% efficacy, independently tested: Effective against bacteria including MRSA and E. coli, viruses including SARS-CoV-2, and fungal spores — tested and recognised by globally approved standards.
  • HOCl technology — non-toxic and non-stinging: Hypochlorous acid is the molecule white blood cells naturally produce. Unlike alcohol or iodine-based antiseptics, it does not sting on open wounds, does not damage healthy tissue, and is non-toxic if ingested — an important consideration for dogs that will lick a treated area.
  • Safe across all skin types and all animals: pH neutral for skin. Safe for dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, and other animals. Safe for use on eyes, ears, and the most sensitive or inflamed skin.
  • No steroids, antibiotics, alcohols, or harmful chemicals: The formula is entirely free from pharmaceutical actives — it works through the physical chemistry of HOCl rather than drug-based mechanisms.
  • Wide range of applications: Wound cleaning, ear and eye care, hot spots, interdigital cysts, post-tick bite care, post-grooming disinfection, paw care, and general skin and coat maintenance.
  • Five sizes for different needs: From a precision dropper for targeted application through to a 500ml refill — choose the size that matches your household and usage level.

Size and format guide

Size Format Price Best for
50ml Dropper tip £4.50 Precise application — eyes, ears, small wounds
60ml Spray nozzle £5.99 Starter size — walk bag, handbag, first use
150ml Spray nozzle £7.49 Most popular everyday household size
250ml Spray nozzle £9.79 Multi-pet households, regular users
500ml Spray nozzle £12.79 Best value, frequent use, kennels and groomers

The 50ml Dropper is the only format with a precision dropper tip rather than a spray nozzle. This makes it particularly useful for applying directly to eyes, ear canals, or small targeted wounds where a spray would be too broad. All other sizes use a standard pump spray nozzle.

How to use

Spray or drop directly onto the affected area — no dilution required. For wounds, apply to clean tissue, allow to air dry, and repeat as needed. For eye or ear use, apply a few drops directly or use a soaked cotton pad. There is no need to rinse off. For skin conditions, apply to the affected area two to three times daily, or as directed by your vet.

Storage

Store upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not expose to extreme heat. Check expiry date before use.

Leucillin is a UK-developed veterinary antiseptic used by vets, groomers, and pet owners across the country. Hairy Dogs stocks the full Leucillin spray range as part of our pet health and wound care selection.

Common questions

What is hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and how does it work?
Hypochlorous acid is the molecule white blood cells produce to destroy pathogens — it is part of the body's own immune response. When applied topically, HOCl disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, killing them on contact. Because it is the same chemistry the immune system uses, it is non-toxic to healthy tissue and does not impair the natural healing process. This is fundamentally different from alcohol or iodine antiseptics, which work by chemical toxicity and can damage healthy cells alongside pathogens.
Is it safe if my dog licks the treated area?
Yes — Leucillin is non-toxic if ingested. Unlike alcohol-based antiseptics, which are harmful if swallowed, Leucillin can be safely licked by your dog without causing harm. This is one of the key practical advantages over traditional antiseptics for use on pets, which will almost inevitably attempt to lick any treated wound.
Can I use this on cats, horses, and other animals?
Yes — Leucillin is safe for use on all animals, including cats, horses, birds, reptiles, and small pets. The pH-neutral formula is designed to be compatible with animal skin across species. It is widely used in equine care, avian medicine, and exotic animal care as well as in dog and cat veterinary practice.
How does this compare to TCP, Dettol, or iodine-based antiseptics?
TCP, Dettol, and iodine-based antiseptics work through chemical toxicity — they kill pathogens but also damage healthy tissue, can cause stinging, and are toxic if ingested. For pets, this creates practical problems: they sting on open wounds, cannot be used near eyes, must be diluted, and require rinsing. Leucillin requires no dilution, does not sting, is safe near eyes and ears, and does not require rinsing. For use on animals, it is broadly safer and more practical than traditional antiseptics in most situations.
What is the difference between the 50ml dropper and the spray bottles?
The 50ml dropper has a precision dropper tip that dispenses drops rather than a spray. This is particularly useful for applying directly into the ear canal, onto an eyelid or eye surface, or onto a small precise wound. The spray nozzles on the 60ml, 150ml, 250ml, and 500ml sizes cover larger surface areas quickly — better for general wound cleaning, hot spots, or skin conditions over a wider area. Many owners keep both formats: the dropper for eye and ear work, and a spray bottle for general use.
Can this be used as a replacement for veterinary treatment?
No — Leucillin is an antiseptic for cleaning and disinfecting wounds, not a prescription treatment. For minor cuts, grazes, skin irritation, and general wound maintenance, it is highly effective as a first-line care product. For deeper wounds, infections that are not improving, bite wounds, or any significant health concern, veterinary assessment is required. Leucillin is a first aid and maintenance tool — it does not replace professional veterinary care.
