Life of Riley's Bedtime Biscuits are a calming dog treat formulated specifically for anxious, restless, or excitable dogs. Built on the same gram flour, coconut, and peanut butter base as the rest of the Life of Riley range, these biscuits are infused with four natural calming botanicals: valerian root, chamomile, passionflower, and fennel. Most commercial calming treats contain one or two of these herbs; having all four in a single biscuit represents a more complete formulation than most of the market.

Handmade by Life of Riley Bakery Ltd in the UK. 100% natural, grain-free, and vegan. No artificial additives or preservatives.

  • Valerian root: One of the most extensively researched natural calming agents for dogs. Valerian acts on the same GABA receptors involved in anxiety and stress response — the same pathway targeted by many prescription anti-anxiety medications, but in a milder, herb-derived form. Widely used in veterinary herbal medicine before fireworks, thunderstorms, travel, and other stressful events.
  • Chamomile: Contains apigenin, a naturally occurring compound with mild sedative and anti-anxiety properties. Chamomile also has well-documented anti-inflammatory and digestive soothing effects — useful for dogs whose nighttime restlessness has a digestive component. Gentle enough for use from 12 weeks.
  • Passionflower: A natural anxiolytic with a growing evidence base in both human and veterinary contexts. Like valerian, passionflower acts on GABA pathways and is used specifically for anxiety, nervousness, and difficulty settling. The combination of passionflower with valerian is well-regarded in herbal formulation as the two herbs work complementarily.
  • Fennel: A digestive carminative that helps reduce gas, bloating, and gut discomfort — a common but underappreciated cause of nighttime restlessness in dogs. Fennel also has mild calming properties, supporting the overall formulation.
  • Peanut butter palatability: Important for a calming treat — anxious dogs can be reluctant to eat unfamiliar or medicinal-tasting treats at exactly the moments when they most need them. The peanut butter base makes these highly acceptable even to stressed, food-reluctant dogs.
  • Grain-free and vegan: No grains, no dairy, no meat — suitable for dogs on hypoallergenic or grain-free diets.

Feeding guidance

Suitable for dogs of all breeds from 12 weeks. Feed one or two biscuits approximately 30 minutes before the anticipated stressful event or bedtime. For ongoing nighttime anxiety, feed as part of a consistent evening routine. Always ensure fresh water is available. This is a complementary food, not a complete diet.

Note: Contains peanut butter — not suitable for dogs with a known peanut or nut allergy. These biscuits are a food supplement containing natural calming botanicals and are not a veterinary medicine. For dogs with severe anxiety, persistent sleep disturbance, or known medical conditions, consult your vet before use.

Common questions

Do these actually work for anxious dogs?
The four herbs in this recipe all have genuine evidence behind them. Valerian root and passionflower have the strongest research base for anxiety reduction and are both widely used in veterinary herbal medicine. Chamomile's apigenin has demonstrated anxiolytic effects in multiple studies. Fennel contributes digestive comfort, which is a secondary but real contributor to restlessness. The honest answer is that no natural supplement works for every dog, and for severe anxiety a vet consultation is always the right first step. But for mild to moderate anxiety, pre-event nerves, or dogs that simply struggle to settle at bedtime, a formulation like this is a practical, low-risk first intervention.
Can I give these before fireworks or bonfire night?
Yes — these are designed for exactly this kind of situational use. Give one or two biscuits 20–30 minutes before the anticipated noise begins, in a calm environment. For best results, pair with other comfort measures: a safe space your dog already associates with security, background noise to mask sudden sounds, and your own calm behaviour. The herbs work most effectively when the dog is already relaxed rather than mid-panic, so early administration matters.
Is it safe to give these every night?
Yes — all four herbs are safe for regular use at treat quantities. Chamomile and fennel are particularly mild and are used in daily herbal practice without concern. Valerian and passionflower have a longer history of safe daily use in both human and animal supplementation. These are not sedatives and will not cause drowsiness or impaired function — they support relaxation without knocking a dog out. Feed as part of a balanced diet and adjust main meals if feeding treats daily.
Are these suitable for puppies?
Suitable from 12 weeks. Chamomile is one of the gentlest calming herbs available and is routinely used with young dogs. The other herbs are present in small quantities as part of a biscuit rather than a concentrated supplement. For very young puppies showing significant anxiety, speak to your vet — but for mild restlessness or difficulty settling, these biscuits are a low-risk option from 12 weeks.
