A leaf-shaped suction lick mat from Ancol's ÖRVA range. Spread food across the textured surface, stick it to the floor or a wall, and your dog has to work at it with their tongue rather than clearing a bowl in nine seconds flat.

28cm wide, freezable, and it takes anything spreadable — raw food, wet food, dog-safe nut butter, yoghurt, or soaked kibble.

  • Suction cups on the base — Sticks to a hard floor, a tiled wall or the side of the bath, so a determined dog can't just pick it up and carry it off.
  • Slows eating down mechanically — The textured surface means food has to be licked out of the grooves rather than gulped from a bowl.
  • Freezable — Load it, freeze it, and it lasts considerably longer. This is the single best thing you can do with a lick mat.
  • Takes almost anything spreadable — Raw, wet food, dog-safe peanut butter, plain yoghurt, soaked kibble.
  • 28cm wide — A decent surface area, so a full meal fits rather than just a smear.

How to use it

Press the suction cups onto a clean, smooth, dry surface — tile, laminate, glass or the side of the bath all work; carpet and textured wood don't. Spread food thinly across the whole leaf, freeze if you want it to last, and let your dog get on with it. Ten to twenty minutes is a good session.

Bath time is the classic use: stick it to the tiles at your dog's head height and they have something to concentrate on while you get on with washing them.

Safety and cleaning

Supervise your dog while they use it, and take it away if they start chewing the mat rather than licking it — it's a feeding accessory, not a chew toy. Wash thoroughly between uses; grooved surfaces hold food residue and need a proper going over with a brush. Count whatever you put on it as part of your dog's daily food, not as an extra on top.

Common questions

What do I put on it?
Anything spreadable that your dog already eats: wet food, raw, soaked kibble, plain yoghurt, or a dog-safe peanut butter. If you're using peanut butter, check it's xylitol-free — xylitol is toxic to dogs. Whatever you use counts towards their daily food rather than being extra.
Do the suction cups actually hold?
On a clean, smooth, dry surface, yes — tile, glass, laminate or a bath panel. They won't hold on carpet, textured wood, or anything greasy or damp. Wipe the surface first and press each cup down firmly.
How do I get it properly clean?
Warm soapy water and a washing-up brush, working into the grooves — a cloth alone won't reach. Rinse well and let it dry fully before the next use. Clean it after every use rather than letting food dry into the texture, which is much harder to shift.
Is it right for my dog?
Lick mats suit dogs that eat too fast, dogs that need something to do, and any situation where you want your dog occupied and stationary for a while — bath time, nail clipping, visitors at the door. If your dog tends to chew things rather than lick them, supervise closely and take it away if they start on the mat itself.
