Design

The Ancol Ice Paws freezable cooling toy is available in three designs — Ice Lolly, Turtle, and Starfish. Select your preferred design above. Fill with water, freeze overnight, and hand it over for your dog to lick and work through at their own pace. As the ice melts, the toy provides a sustained cooling and enrichment activity that keeps dogs calm and focused during warm weather.

  • Three designs to choose from: Ice Lolly, Turtle, and Starfish each offer different shapes, angles, and surfaces to engage with. If you want to vary the experience across sessions, all three designs are available individually at £9.99 each.
  • Sustained cooling enrichment: As the ice melts, the toy releases cold water steadily — rewarding your dog's focus without giving everything up at once, making it a calming activity during warm weather.
  • Gentle teething relief: The chilled surface provides natural soothing for puppies going through the teething stage, reducing the drive to chew less appropriate items around the home.
  • Promotes calm after exercise: A frozen toy gives an overheated dog a focused task rather than restless pacing — particularly useful in the window after a walk on a warm day.
  • Flexible to fill: Water alone works perfectly. For extra motivation, a small amount of diluted low-salt stock or dog-safe fruit juice added before freezing can increase engagement.

How to use

Fill the toy through its opening with cold water, then stand it upright in the freezer with the opening facing up. Freeze for a minimum of two hours — ideally overnight. Serve straight from the freezer on a drip-friendly surface or outdoors. Supervise your dog throughout play, as these toys are designed for licking and gentle interaction rather than heavy chewing. Remove and replace immediately if the toy shows any cracking, splitting, or if any part begins to detach.

Suitable for

Suitable for dogs of most sizes from puppyhood onwards, provided play is always supervised. Not recommended for dogs whose instinct is to bite through and destroy toys rather than lick and engage. Best used outdoors or on a water-resistant surface to manage the melt.

Materials and safety

Made from flexible, food-safe material. No sharp edges. Inspect regularly and remove from use if the toy becomes damaged in any way. Seek veterinary advice immediately if any material is ingested. Never leave your dog unsupervised with this or any toy.

Care

Rinse thoroughly after each use and allow to dry completely before refreezing. Hand wash with warm soapy water between uses.

Common questions

How do I fill and freeze the toy properly?
Fill the toy through the opening with cold water, then stand it upright in the freezer with the opening facing up. Freeze for at least two hours — overnight gives the best result. Serve straight from the freezer on a drip-friendly surface or outdoors. The ice will melt gradually as your dog engages with it.
How long does the ice stay frozen once I give it to my dog?
This depends on the ambient temperature and how actively your dog engages with the toy. On a warm day outdoors, expect around 20 to 40 minutes of cool play. In a cooler or shaded environment it will last longer. The gradual melt is part of what makes these toys effective — it paces the engagement and keeps your dog focused throughout.
My dog tends to destroy most toys — are these suitable for aggressive chewers?
These toys are intended for licking and gentle interaction, not heavy chewing. We would not recommend them for dogs who bite through soft or rubber toys quickly — if pieces detach, they could pose a safety risk. If your dog is a powerful chewer, these may not be appropriate. As with any toy, supervise play at all times and remove immediately if damage occurs.
Are these suitable for puppies?
Yes — chilled toys are particularly useful for teething puppies as the cold surface helps soothe inflamed gums. Always supervise puppies during play and check the toy for damage before each session. If your puppy is very young or still on a milk-only diet, check with your vet before introducing any frozen toy.
What are these toys made from?
The toys are made from flexible, food-safe material designed to hold water when frozen. For the precise material specification, contact Ancol directly or reach out to us at info@hairydogs.co.uk and we will confirm with the supplier on your behalf.
Can I add flavouring or treats to the water before freezing?
Yes — a small amount of diluted low-salt chicken or beef stock can be added before freezing to increase engagement for less food-motivated dogs. Keep additions minimal and always ensure the stock contains no onion, garlic, or added salt. Avoid grape juice and citrus. The focus should remain on the cooling and licking activity rather than the flavour alone.
