Design

The Ice Paws Ice Lolly is the most recognisable design in Ancol's freezable cooling toy range — and the only one available in two sizes, making it a practical choice for households with dogs of different sizes or for those wanting a smaller option for puppies. Fill with water, freeze overnight, and let your dog work through the melt. The classic ice lolly shape gives dogs a familiar grip point and a satisfying surface to lick around.

  • Available in Mini and Large: The Mini is well suited to smaller breeds, puppies, and dogs that prefer a lighter toy, while the Large is better suited to medium and larger dogs for a longer session.
  • Sustained cooling enrichment: As the ice melts, the toy releases cold water steadily — a focused, calming activity that keeps dogs occupied for considerably longer than a standard treat or chew.
  • Gentle teething relief: The chilled surface provides natural soothing comfort for puppies in the teething stage, and the Mini size makes it particularly manageable for younger, smaller dogs.
  • Recognisable design: The ice lolly shape is easy for dogs to hold in their paws or work against a surface, giving them a natural way to interact with the toy without it rolling away.
  • Reusable and low maintenance: Rinse, refill, refreeze. No specialist treats or preparation beyond the overnight freeze — a practical addition to your summer routine that can be used daily.

How to use

Fill the toy through its opening with cold water, then stand it upright in the freezer with the opening facing up to prevent spills. Freeze for a minimum of two hours — overnight is ideal. Serve straight from the freezer on a drip-friendly surface or outdoors. Supervise your dog throughout play, as these toys are designed for licking and gentle interaction. Remove and replace immediately if the toy shows cracking, splitting, or if any part begins to detach.

Size guide

The Mini is recommended for small breeds, puppies over eight weeks, and dogs that prefer lighter toys. The Large suits medium to large breeds and dogs that benefit from a longer cool-down session. If your dog is between sizes or tends to be rough with toys, we recommend sizing up to the Large for a more durable experience.

Suitable for

Suitable for dogs from puppyhood onwards, with size selected according to the guide above. Always supervise play. Not suitable for dogs whose instinct is to bite through and destroy toys rather than lick and engage. Best used outdoors or on a water-resistant mat to manage the melt.

Materials and safety

Made from flexible, food-safe material. No sharp edges. Inspect before each use and remove from play if the toy is damaged in any way. Seek veterinary advice immediately if any material is ingested. Never leave your dog unsupervised with this or any toy.

Care

Rinse thoroughly after each use and allow to dry completely before refreezing. Hand wash with warm soapy water between sessions.

Common questions

Which size should I choose for my dog?
As a general guide, the Mini suits small breeds, puppies, and dogs that prefer lighter toys — it is also a good choice for dogs new to frozen toys who may not engage with a full-sized toy straight away. The Large is better suited to medium and larger breeds, and to dogs that benefit from a longer licking session. If you are unsure, go Large — it works well for most dogs and will last longer per session.
How do I fill and freeze it correctly?
Fill the toy through its opening with cold water, then stand it upright in the freezer with the hole facing up so no water escapes during freezing. A minimum of two hours is needed — overnight gives the best result. Take it directly from the freezer to your dog on a surface that can handle a little water, or take it outside.
Is the Mini suitable for young puppies?
The Mini is well suited to puppies over eight weeks as the smaller size is easier to manage and the cold surface helps soothe teething discomfort. Always supervise puppies throughout play and inspect the toy for damage before each session. If your puppy is very young or still on a milk diet, check with your vet before introducing any frozen toy.
My dog destroys most toys — is this suitable?
These toys are designed for licking and gentle interaction, not heavy chewing. We would not recommend them for dogs who bite through soft or flexible toys, as detached pieces could pose a choking risk. For strong chewers, a more robust enrichment option would be more appropriate. As with any toy, always supervise play and remove immediately if any damage occurs.
Can I add something to the water to make it more interesting?
Yes — a small amount of diluted low-salt chicken or beef stock added to the water before freezing can increase engagement for less food-motivated dogs. Keep additions minimal and always check the stock contains no onion, garlic, or added salt. Dog-safe fruit puree (avoiding grapes, citrus, and anything with xylitol) also works well. Plain water is fine for most dogs once the habit is established.
What is it made from?
The toy is made from flexible, food-safe material designed to hold water when frozen. For the precise material specification, contact Ancol directly or get in touch with us at info@hairydogs.co.uk and we will confirm with the supplier on your behalf.
