Design

The Olwen Ice Bear is part of Ancol's Ice Paws range of freezable cooling toys — a single toy in a fun ice bear shape that works on a simple and effective principle. Fill it with water, freeze it overnight, and hand it to your dog to lick and work through at their own pace. A low-effort, no-mess way to give an overheated dog something constructive to do on a warm day.

  • Cooling lick enrichment: As the ice melts, your dog gets a sustained and focused activity that releases cold water steadily — a calmer, more rewarding alternative to pacing or restlessness on hot days.
  • Fun ice bear design: The Olwen Ice Bear shape gives dogs different angles and surfaces to work at, helping maintain interest throughout the session.
  • Gentle teething relief: The chilled surface provides natural soothing comfort for puppies going through the teething stage, reducing the drive to chew inappropriate items around the home.
  • No treats required: Water alone creates an effective cool-down session. For less food-motivated dogs, a small amount of diluted low-salt stock added before freezing can increase engagement.
  • Easy to build a rotation: Works well alone or alongside other Ice Paws designs — including the Watermelon and Orange toys — to keep novelty high across multiple summer sessions.

How to use

Fill the toy through its opening with cold water, then stand it upright in the freezer with the opening facing up. Freeze for a minimum of two hours — ideally overnight. Serve straight from the freezer on a drip-friendly surface or outdoors. Supervise your dog throughout play, as this toy is designed for licking and gentle interaction rather than heavy chewing. Remove and replace immediately if the toy shows any cracking, splitting, or if any part begins to detach.

Suitable for

Suitable for dogs of most sizes from puppyhood onwards, provided play is always supervised. Not recommended for dogs whose instinct is to bite through and destroy toys rather than lick and engage. Best used outdoors or on a water-resistant surface to manage the melt.

Materials and safety

Made from flexible, food-safe material. No sharp edges. Inspect before each use and remove from play if the toy becomes damaged in any way. Seek veterinary advice immediately if any material is ingested. Never leave your dog unsupervised with this or any toy.

Care

Rinse thoroughly after each use and allow to dry completely before refreezing. Hand wash with warm soapy water between uses.

Ancol has been designing pet products since 1971, with a commitment to reducing waste through recycled and recyclable packaging. Hairy Dogs stocks the Ice Paws range as part of our curated selection of summer essentials for dogs.

Common questions

How do I fill and freeze this toy properly?
Fill the toy through its opening with cold water, then place it upright in the freezer with the opening facing up so no water escapes during freezing. Leave for at least two hours — overnight is ideal. Remove from the freezer and give directly to your dog on a surface that handles drips well, or take it outside.
How long will the ice last once I give it to my dog?
On a warm day outdoors, expect roughly 20 to 40 minutes of engaged play before the ice fully melts. In cooler or shaded conditions it will last longer. The gradual melt is intentional — it paces the activity and keeps your dog returning to the toy rather than losing interest quickly.
My dog chews through most toys — is this suitable?
This toy is designed for licking and gentle interaction, not heavy chewing. It is not appropriate for dogs who bite through soft or flexible toys, as detached pieces could pose a choking risk. If your dog is a strong chewer, we would recommend a more durable enrichment option. As with all toys, always supervise play and remove the toy immediately if any damage occurs.
Is this suitable for puppies?
Yes — cold toys are particularly helpful for teething puppies as the chilled surface soothes inflamed gums and reduces the urge to chew household items. Always supervise puppies throughout play and inspect the toy for damage before each session. If your puppy is very young or still on a milk diet, consult your vet before introducing frozen toys.
What is this toy made from?
The toy is made from flexible, food-safe material designed to hold water when frozen. For the precise material specification, contact Ancol directly or get in touch with us at info@hairydogs.co.uk and we will confirm with the supplier on your behalf.
Can I use it with the other Ice Paws designs?
Absolutely — rotating between the Olwen Ice Bear and the other Ice Paws designs (Watermelon, Orange, or the set of three including Turtle and Starfish) keeps the activity fresh for dogs who become familiar with one shape. We stock the full Ice Paws range; see our other listings for the complete selection.
