Scottie Squid is an eco leather tug toy from Miro & Makauri — a squid-shaped interactive toy made from genuine leather, natural jute rope, and coconut-fibre filling, coloured with vegetable dyes rather than chemical dyes. No squeaker, no plastic components, no synthetic materials. At 40cm total length it's a practical tug size for most breeds and play styles, with the tentacle structure giving both dog and owner something to grip from different angles.

Made by Miro & Makauri. Natural materials throughout. Built for interactive tug and fetch play.

  • Genuine leather body: Leather is a durable, natural material that withstands tug play without breaking down the way synthetic fabrics do. It has a natural texture dogs find engaging and a familiar scent that holds interest. Miro & Makauri use leather as the primary material specifically because of its durability and natural credentials.
  • Natural jute rope: Jute is a plant-based fibre — strong, biodegradable, and with a satisfying texture for dogs to mouth and grip. It also provides a contrasting tactile element to the leather, making the toy more interesting to interact with.
  • Coconut-fibre filling: Natural coconut husk fibre rather than synthetic stuffing. When (not if) the toy is eventually breached, the filling is natural and non-toxic rather than a handful of polyester wadding.
  • Vegetable dyes — no harsh chemical dyes: The colour comes from vegetable-based dyes rather than industrial chemical dyes. Relevant for dogs who mouth and chew their toys regularly — what's on the surface ends up in the dog.
  • No squeaker: A deliberate design choice. Squeakers are a common toy failure point and can be swallowed when a toy is breached. Their absence here makes Scottie Squid a calmer, quieter option — better for households sensitive to noise and safer when a dog reaches the interior of the toy.
  • Squid shape — multiple grip points: The tentacle structure means both the dog and the person holding the other end have something to grip naturally, making tug play more intuitive and less likely to result in fingers near teeth.

Care and safety

Spot clean only — wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air dry. Do not soak, machine wash, or tumble dry. Leather will deteriorate if saturated.

Always supervise play. No toy is indestructible — inspect regularly for wear, and remove if parts become loose or detached. Not recommended for dogs that systematically destroy toys; this is a tug and interactive play toy, not a heavy chew.

Common questions

Is Scottie Squid suitable for puppies?
Yes for supervised interactive play. Choose based on your puppy's size and play style — at 40cm total length it's well suited to medium and larger puppies. For very small or young puppies, supervised short play sessions are sensible. The absence of a squeaker and the use of non-toxic vegetable dyes and natural materials means it's a safer option than many synthetic toys if mouthed.
Can my dog chew it as well as tug with it?
Light chewing is fine — leather is a natural material and moderate chewing won't cause harm. Scottie Squid is designed primarily as a tug and interactive play toy rather than a dedicated chew, so dogs that are systematic destructive chewers will work through it faster than it was designed for. For dogs that destroy toys, this isn't the right choice — but for dogs that play with toys rather than demolish them, the leather construction is genuinely durable for tug play.
Why no squeaker?
Two reasons. First, squeakers are one of the most common toy failure points — dogs are motivated to find and remove them, and a swallowed squeaker is a veterinary emergency. Second, many households and dogs find squeakers overstimulating — they can heighten arousal during play in ways that aren't always desirable. Scottie Squid's appeal comes from the texture, materials, and interactive play dynamic rather than auditory stimulation.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry naturally. Do not soak, submerge, machine wash, or tumble dry — prolonged water exposure will damage the leather and cause the jute to degrade faster. For surface dirt from outdoor play, a wipe down is sufficient. If the toy becomes heavily saturated, reshape it and allow it to dry slowly away from direct heat.
