The Miro & Makauri step-in air mesh vest harness is designed around a practical principle: most of the difficulty in putting a harness on a dog comes from the fitting method. The step-in design removes the need to pull anything over the head — place the front paws through the two openings, fold the top panel over the back, press the velcro tab closed, and fasten the safety buckle. The whole process takes seconds, which makes a significant difference for dogs that find traditional fitting methods stressful. Made from 350gsm air mesh in 8 colours, sized from XXS to XL to cover toy breeds through to medium dogs.

  • Step-in design — no overhead fitting: The front paws go in first, then the harness is secured over the back. No pulling over the head, no neck clasps, no wrestling. Particularly useful for dogs that are reactive to overhead handling.
  • 350gsm air mesh construction: The mesh fabric is lightweight and breathable, allowing air to circulate and preventing heat build-up during walks. The material is soft against the body and holds its shape during wear. Can also be soaked in cool water for additional cooling in warm weather.
  • Velcro tab and safety buckle: Two independent fastening points — the velcro tab closes first across the back, then the safety buckle clips over it. Both need to be opened to remove the harness, making accidental release unlikely.
  • Reflective strips: Hi-vis reflective strips are built into the harness for low-light visibility during early morning, evening, and winter walks.
  • Vest construction for an even fit: The vest-style body distributes pressure across the chest and torso rather than concentrating it at a single attachment point — relevant for dogs that move actively during walks or for smaller breeds where even weight distribution matters.
  • 8 colours, XXS to XL: Covers toy breeds and small dogs through to medium breeds. Note that XL is available in Black, Red, and Country Green only, and XXS is available in all colours except Country Green — see notes below before ordering.

Sizing guide

Measure your dog's neck at its narrowest point and the chest at its widest point behind the front legs. Use the chest measurement as your primary guide. If between sizes, go up.

Size Neck (cm) Chest (cm) Typical breeds
XXS 24–28 30–34 Yorkshire Terrier, Papillon, very small Toy breeds
XS 28–32 34–39 Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Maltese
S 30–35 39–44 Miniature Dachshund, Jack Russell, Mini Schnauzer
M 34–39 44–50 Westie, Pug, Border Terrier
L 39–44 50–56 Cocker Spaniel, French Bulldog, Beagle
XL 44–50 56–62 Border Collie, Springer Spaniel, Australian Cattle Dog

Colour and size availability

The harness is available in 8 colours: Black, Red, Royal Blue, Aqua Blue, Country Green, Bright Pink, Bright Orange, and Purple. Two notes before ordering:

  • XXS is available in Black, Red, Royal Blue, Aqua Blue, Purple, Bright Orange, and Bright Pink. Country Green is not currently available in XXS.
  • XL is currently in stock in Black, Red, and Country Green only. The remaining five XL colours are not currently available — contact us at info@hairydogs.co.uk to register interest.

How to fit

Lay the harness flat on the floor. Place your dog's two front paws through the leg openings. Fold the back panel up over your dog's back. Press the velcro tab firmly closed across the back panel, then fasten the safety buckle over it. Check the fit: you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the harness and your dog's body at the chest and around the girth. If the harness feels tight or restricts movement, try the next size up.

Materials and care

350gsm air mesh fabric. Hand wash in cool water using a mild detergent and allow to air dry flat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. For summer use, the fabric can be soaked in cool water before fitting to provide additional cooling throughout the walk.

Miro & Makauri specialise in practical, accessible dog accessories. The step-in air mesh harness is stocked at Hairy Dogs as a popular choice for owners of toy breeds and small dogs, and as a first harness for those moving away from collar-only walking.

Common questions

How do I choose the right size?
Use the chest measurement as your primary guide — measure around the widest part of the body behind the front legs. The chest range in the sizing table is the most reliable indicator. If your dog sits between sizes, go up. Very small toy breeds under 34cm chest should look at the XXS; Chihuahuas, Maltese, and Pomeranians typically fit XS (34–39cm chest).
How does the step-in fitting actually work?
Lay the harness flat. Place your dog's front paws through the two leg openings — one per side. Fold the back panel upward over your dog's back. Press the velcro tab firmly closed, then clip the safety buckle over it. That's it — no lifting over the head, no threading straps, no neck clasp to manage. To remove, unclip the buckle and peel back the velcro, then lift the front paws out.
Is it suitable for dogs that pull on the lead?
The vest harness has a single back D-ring for lead attachment, so it is a standard back-clip harness rather than a no-pull design. For a dog that pulls consistently, a front-clip harness (where the lead attaches to the chest) is more effective at reducing pulling. This harness is well-suited to dogs that walk relatively calmly, or as a comfortable everyday harness for smaller breeds that do not generate significant pulling force.
Which colours are available in XXS and XL?
XXS is available in Black, Red, Royal Blue, Aqua Blue, Purple, Bright Orange, and Bright Pink. Country Green is not currently available in XXS. XL is currently in stock in Black, Red, and Country Green only — the other five colours in XL are not currently available. Contact us at info@hairydogs.co.uk to register interest in any out-of-stock size and colour combination.
Is it suitable for puppies?
Yes — the step-in design is particularly practical for puppies, which often find overhead fitting stressful. The XXS fits from 30cm chest, covering most small breeds and puppies from around 12 weeks onwards, once they are large enough to fit the harness securely. Check the fit carefully on a fast-growing puppy and move up a size as needed.
How do I clean it?
Hand wash in cool water using a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly and lay flat to air dry. Do not machine wash — the mesh fabric and velcro fastenings are not designed for machine washing. For day-to-day light dirt, a wipe with a damp cloth is usually sufficient.
