Air dried sprats are one of the most nutritionally efficient single-ingredient treats you can give a dog. Small, oily fish — dried whole — pack omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, substantial protein, and natural anti-inflammatory compounds into a treat with a minimal ingredient list: just fish. Hairy Dogs sprats are 100% air dried with no additives or preservatives, ASC certified for responsible sourcing, and suitable from 12 weeks. Available in 40g, 250g, 500g, and 1kg.

  • 100% single ingredient: Air dried whole sprats — nothing added, nothing removed. The entire ingredient list is fish.
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids: Essential fatty acids that support healthy skin and coat, immune function, joint health, and cognitive function — occurring naturally in oily fish rather than supplemented.
  • Natural anti-inflammatory properties: Oily fish are one of the most consistently supported natural sources of anti-inflammatory compounds, relevant for dogs with joint issues, skin conditions, or inflammatory responses.
  • High protein, grain and gluten free: 67.2% protein with no grain, cereal, or gluten ingredients. Chicken free. Suitable for dogs on elimination diets or with grain or poultry sensitivities.
  • ASC certified: Sourced from fisheries certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council — the internationally recognised standard for responsible, sustainable fishing practices.

Which size?

The 40g bag is a useful trial size or a week's supply of training treats for a small breed. The 250g is the most popular everyday size for most dogs. The 500g and 1kg offer better value per gram and suit dogs that eat sprats regularly, households with multiple dogs, or owners who batch-buy treats.

Feeding guide

Feed as a treat alongside a complete, balanced diet. Portion according to your dog's size, weight, and activity level, accounting for the caloric contribution within their daily food intake. Sprats are oily, so for smaller breeds or dogs new to fish treats, start with smaller portions and build up gradually. Fresh water should always be available.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, keep sealed and use within six to eight weeks.

A complimentary food for dogs — feed under supervision and always allow access to fresh water.

Common questions

Are these suitable for puppies?
Yes — Hairy Dogs sprats are suitable for puppies from 12 weeks of age. For very young puppies, break the sprats into smaller pieces appropriate for their size. The high omega-3 content is particularly beneficial during early development, supporting brain and eye function as well as coat condition.
What does ASC certified mean?
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is the world's leading certification programme for responsibly sourced seafood. ASC certification means the fish has been sourced from fisheries that meet independently audited environmental and social standards — covering fish welfare, water quality, the impact on wild fish populations, and fair labour conditions. For dog treats, it provides assurance about both the quality of the fish and the sustainability of its origin.
Are these suitable for dogs with chicken or grain allergies?
Yes — the only ingredient is sprats. There is no chicken, grain, gluten, or any other additive. This makes them a useful treat option for dogs on elimination diets, those with diagnosed poultry sensitivities, or dogs that react to cereal-based treats. Always introduce new foods gradually when managing a dog with known sensitivities.
Can I use these as training treats?
Yes — sprats are a high-value training treat for most dogs. They have a strong scent that most dogs respond to well, and their small size means you can break them into appropriate portions without overfeeding during a session. The 40g bag is a practical training treat size; the 250g is better value if you use them regularly. Bear in mind that oily fish can leave a residue on your hands — a practical consideration for training sessions.
What is air drying and why does it matter?
Air drying removes moisture slowly at low temperatures, preserving the natural nutritional profile of the fish — including the omega fatty acids, which can be degraded by high-heat processing methods. Unlike oven-baked or heavily processed treats, air dried fish retains a much higher proportion of its original nutrient content. It also requires no artificial preservatives, as the low moisture content naturally extends shelf life.
How do I store them once opened?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, keep the bag sealed between uses and aim to use within six to eight weeks. The natural oils in the fish can become rancid if the treats are exposed to air and warmth for extended periods — a sealed container or clip-close bag works well for the larger sizes.
